Speakeasy Bar

The Drifter

About

The Drifter is a cocktail bar in the basement of the Green Door Tavern on Orleans Street in River North. The bar describes the space as an authentic 1920s-era speakeasy, and Green Door Tavern calls the room the only remaining speakeasy room from Prohibition. A rotating menu of more than 100 cocktails comes printed on tarot cards, and live acts perform through the evening.

What to know

  • Guests enter through the main door of Green Door Tavern and take the stairs down, per the bar’s directions.
  • The Infatuation reports that a doorknob disguised among knickknacks near the basement bathrooms opens the room.
  • Burlesque performers use a small stage, and the curtains double as a screen for vintage burlesque films.
  • The Green Door Tavern building dates to 1872, just after the Great Chicago Fire.
