Big Star is a taco and whiskey bar at 1531 N. Damen Ave., at the six corners of Damen, North and Milwaukee in Wicker Park, styled after Bakersfield honky-tonks with executive chef-partner Paul Kahan. Corn tortillas are pressed one at a time in house for tacos such as al pastor with grilled pineapple, panza (braised pork belly with salsa arriera and chicharrones), carne asada, beer-battered pescado and papas con rajas. A bourbon list of house barrel selections, a large patio and a to-go window on Damen keep the room busy year-round.

- A second location is across from Wrigley Field at 3640 N. Clark St.
- Taco Tuesday drops pastor, pollo, panza and papas tacos to $2.95, and Thursdays do the same for carnitas.
- A Big Star Smash Burger with a double patty and crispy chihuahua cheese is on the specials board.
