Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light

Christmas Around the World started in 1942 with a single tree redecorated each day for the Allied nations, according to the museum, and it has grown into a forest of more than 50 trees and displays decorated by community volunteers to represent cultures and traditions from around the world. The companion Holidays of Light section covers Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali and other seasonal celebrations. The exhibit runs from November 7, 2026 through January 3, 2027.

Opening day doubles as a tree lighting and cultural festival: performances run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the Grand Tree is lit at 11 a.m., according to the museum. Simulated snow falls every 30 minutes in the North Court beside the tree throughout the run. Two after-hours Naughty or Nice nights are scheduled, a 21-and-over edition on December 10 and a family edition on December 19, both 6 to 10 p.m.

The exhibit is included with general museum admission; the museum sells timed tickets online and prices vary by date. Seasonal food pop-ups and an $85 holiday meal package for four are also on offer.

Plan your visit

Metra Electric trains stop at 55th-56th-57th Street, a short walk west of the museum, and CTA buses 6, 10, 55 and 2 stop nearby (the 10 Museum of Science and Industry route runs seasonally). The museum’s underground garage on the south side of the building charges by the day and fills on weekend afternoons in December, so mornings are quieter. Weekdays before winter break are the calmest time to see the trees.
