Downtown Evanston Holiday Light Celebration

Evanston’s downtown tree lighting is Saturday, December 5, 2026 at Fountain Square, according to Downtown Evanston, the business district organization that runs it. Live holiday music from local singing groups starts at 4:30 p.m., the tree is lit at about 5 p.m. with city officials and guests on hand, and performances continue at the square afterward.

From about 5:30 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus pose for free photos in the Crystal Ballroom at The Merion, 1611 Chicago Avenue, a block east. The whole evening is free.

Downtown Evanston follows it with a Warm Bevvy Walk on Thursday, December 10 from 4 to 7 p.m., a self-guided stroll with a souvenir mug and warm drinks poured by downtown shops and restaurants.

Take the Purple Line to Davis or Metra’s Union Pacific North line to Davis Street; Fountain Square is at the corner of Davis and Sherman, two blocks from both. The city’s Sherman Avenue and Church Street garages are a short walk and offer cheap evening rates. The square is full by 4:45 p.m.; the sidewalks along Sherman have room. Dress warm and bring kids early for a spot near the stage.
