Nightmare on Chicago Street

Nightmare on Chicago Street is a post-apocalyptic block party that closes about eight blocks of downtown Elgin behind fences and fills them with themed zones, costumed performers, DJs, bands, food and a haunted attraction called Nightmare Alley. According to the organizer, the 2026 event runs October 16 and 17, the first time it has gone two nights, with the entry at 150 Dexter Court next to City Hall. The event is for ages 17 and up; younger visitors must stay with a parent or guardian.

Per a September 25, 2026 report from radio station WROK, Friday, October 16 is billed as The Arrival, a concert-focused night with Gym Class Heroes, Plain White T’s and The Ataris, while Saturday, October 17 is the traditional street party with the themed zones and Nightmare Alley. The two nights are ticketed separately through the organizer’s site.

No strollers, bags, coolers, animals (other than service dogs) or weapons, including prop weapons, are allowed, according to the organizer. Costumes are encouraged and most people come in one.

Metra’s Milwaukee District West line ends at Elgin, and the downtown station on Chicago Street sits at the edge of the event footprint, so the train is easiest; check the last inbound departure, which is around midnight on Saturdays. Drivers take I-90 to Route 31 or Route 25; downtown Elgin’s city parking garages fill early, and streets inside the fence close by the afternoon. Gates are busiest in the first hour after opening. Wear shoes for standing on pavement all night, bring only what fits in your pockets (no bags), and carry ID, since the event checks age at the gate.
