About
El Taco Real has been on the 900 block of Hoffman Street in Hammond since April 1, 1974. Raymundo and Esther Garcia, who had run El Farolito in East Chicago, bought the former Igloo ice cream shop in 1973, gutted the building and reopened; over the years the family added a second dining room, a bar and parking on neighboring lots. The pitch is traditional Mexican cooking made to order with nothing pre-made, and regulars ask for dishes Raymundo style for an extra kick. The restaurant says the Best of the Region readers’ contest has named the restaurant best Mexican restaurant every year since the contest started.
