About
Gene & Jude’s is a walk-up hot dog stand at 2720 N River Rd in River Grove, a few minutes east of O’Hare. The menu is four items long: hot dog, double dog, fries and a tamale. The hot dog is the Depression style, a Vienna Beef frank on a steamed bun with mustard, relish, onion and sport peppers, then a fistful of fresh-cut fries pressed on top and the whole thing rolled in paper. People eat standing at the counter or in the car.

- By the stand’s own account, Gene opened his first stand at Polk and Western in Chicago in 1946 and moved to River Road in 1950.
- The posted rules are no seats and no ketchup.
- Anyone hungry should order the double, since a single is modest.
