Glessner House
About
Glessner House is a house museum at 1800 S. Prairie Ave. in the Prairie Avenue Historic District, south of the Loop and a few blocks from the Museum Campus. Henry Hobson Richardson designed the granite residence for John and Frances Glessner, and the building was completed in 1887. Nearly all of the family’s original furnishings remain in place, which makes the interior unusual among Chicago house museums. The museum credits the design as an influence on Sullivan, Wright and Mies van der Rohe.
What to know
- Construction finished in 1887, a year after Richardson died.
- Full tours last 75 minutes and start at the green coach house door on 18th Street.
- Tours run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
- Adult tickets were $20 and children 5 to 12 were $12 as of September 2026.
- The 18th Street Metra Electric station is the closest transit stop, with the Cermak-McCormick Place Green Line slightly farther west.
