Green Tomato Café opened in the spring of 2012 as part of the Lawndale Christian Health Center at 3750 W. Ogden Ave., and no West Side coffee shop has lasted longer. The cafe cooks from scratch and keeps prices low: mini-omelet egg sandwiches named the Cermak (chorizo and jack), the Pulaski (bacon and cheddar) and the Ogden (peppers, onion and spinach) run $4.75, and a hot potato skillet is about $9. Lunch is sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads and smoothies. Long tables, a fireplace, a summer patio, free wifi and free parking make the room a neighborhood meeting spot, and some ingredients come from the Farm on Ogden and beelove honey.
