About
The Hoosier Theatre opened in 1924 on 119th Street in Whiting and is billed by its owners as the last vaudeville movie palace in Northwest Indiana. The ornate terra-cotta facade went on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, but a 1985 stage fire and decades of neglect left the auditorium with no projector, seats unchanged since the 1940s and icicles hanging from the roof when Purdue-trained engineer Nick Katris took possession on January 6, 1991 and began the restoration. The theater now books concerts and tribute acts: a Led Zeppelin tribute on October 10, 2026 and American English performing the Beatles on November 7, 2026.
