French Bistro

Le Bouchon

About

Le Bouchon is a small French bistro on Damen Avenue in Bucktown, between Homer Street and Armitage Avenue. Jean-Claude Poilevey opened the restaurant in 1993, and his sons Oliver and Nicolas have run the dining room and kitchen since 2016. The menu sticks to the Paris bistro canon: onion tart, French onion soup, escargot in garlic butter, salade Lyonnaise, steak frites and poulet rôti, plus a whole roasted duck carved at the table.

What to know

  • Executive chef Waldo Gallegos has cooked at Le Bouchon since opening day in 1993.
  • The Poilevey family also owns Obelix, a contemporary French restaurant in River North.
  • Time Out Chicago ranked Le Bouchon first in its December 2023 guide to the city’s best French restaurants.
  • Reservations are booked through SevenRooms.
  • The Damen stop on the CTA Blue Line is about half a mile south.
