Stony Island Arts Bank

Stony Island Arts Bank is Theaster Gates’s restored 1923 savings bank at 68th and Stony Island, a block from Jackson Park and the Obama Presidential Center. Gates bought the building in 2013 and reopened the 17,000-square-foot space in 2015 as a home for his work and the archives in his care, including the Johnson Publishing Company library of Ebony and Jet books and periodicals on the second floor. In June 2026 the ground floor reopened with Han Cha, a Korean-inspired high tea salon with a three-course prix fixe served on Gates-made ceramics, and Yunomi, a walk-in cocktail bar, both run with Heiji Choy Black.
