Zarlengo’s has made Italian ice in Chicago Heights since 1983, and the shop on Joe Orr Road now makes hand-crafted gelato as well. Everything sold is manufactured in house, the gelato board is rewritten every morning as flavors sell out or get added, and the Italian ice side of the menu is dairy free. A retail counter, a drive-thru window and a wholesale operation run out of the same building west of Halsted Street. The Chicago Heights Economic Development Corporation lists the company among its case studies, and the shop’s site notes a feature on ABC 7’s Localish program.
