Open House Chicago

Open House Chicago is a two-day, free architecture festival. According to the organizer, the Chicago Architecture Center, the 2026 edition runs October 17 and 18 and needs no registration: you show up at a participating site and walk in. WBEZ reported on September 9, 2026 that more than 200 sites in roughly 30 neighborhoods are on the list, with 20 new ones this year.

The new sites, per WBEZ, include the Muddy Waters Mojo Museum, the Blackhawks Ice Center, the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry and the Sears Sunken Garden, with additions in Woodlawn, Garfield Park, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Chinatown and downtown. The rest of the list is the usual mix of private offices, rooftops, sacred spaces, theaters and houses that are closed to the public the other 363 days of the year.

Everything is free. The organizer sells priority passes that let members skip lines at some sites, and it runs a photo competition for pictures taken during the weekend. Hours differ site by site, so build a route on the organizer’s site before you go rather than wandering.

Plan your visit

Pick a neighborhood and cluster your stops; trying to cross the city for one building wastes the day. Downtown sites are a short walk from every L line, and the Chicago Architecture Center itself is at 111 E. Wacker Drive, steps from the State/Lake and Clark/Lake stations. Neighborhood clusters in Hyde Park (Metra Electric to 55th-56th-57th Street), Pullman (Metra Electric to 111th Street) and Garfield Park (Green Line to Conservatory) are easy without a car. Popular downtown rooftops and lobbies have lines by late morning on Saturday; Sunday mornings are quieter. Bring a charged phone for the site map, comfortable shoes and an ID, since some office buildings ask for one at the desk.
