The 10 best jazz clubs in Chicago
This list ranks the 10 best jazz clubs in Chicago, nine inside city limits and one in west suburban Berwyn, for anyone planning a night of live jazz this fall. Every room books jazz on a weekly schedule, and the mix runs from a Prohibition-era bar in Uptown to a Roscoe Village hall for experimental players, with a dinner club, a piano listening room and two neighborhood bars in between.
The list favors rooms where the music is the main event, with late-night jam sessions and nonprofit series counted alongside the classic clubs. Costs swing widely. Two picks list no cover on their jazz nights, a Rogers Park room charges $10 to $20, the River North dinner club averages $20 a guest, and a Streeterville listening room adds a $10 drink minimum for each set on top of the ticket.
How we chose
Two things decided the order: how many nights each room booked jazz on the October 2026 calendar, and how long the room has been presenting the music. Clubs with jazz five or more nights a week come first, and the three with the deepest history lead. Rooms that book jazz a few nights a week, or that focus on experimental and improvised work, follow. Recognition from named outside sources, such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Chicago Sun-Times and WTTW, settled close calls, and the one suburban room ranks last because city clubs come first here. Bigger halls that book jazz now and then are in the guide to live music in Chicago venues by size.
Hours and prices below come from each business and change without notice. Call ahead if you are making a special trip.
Green Mill
Live music plays seven nights a week at the Green Mill, the Uptown bar at Broadway and Lawrence Avenue that the Chicago Sun-Times dates to 1907, when the saloon opened as Pop Morse’s Roadhouse. The weekly lineup is steady: Joel Paterson on most Mondays, the Chicago Cellar Boys on Tuesdays, Alan Gresik’s Swing Orchestra on Thursdays and the Soul Message Band on Sundays. Friday and Saturday add late sets that start at 1 a.m. That nightly calendar, plus 40 years of jazz booking since Dave Jemilo took over in 1986, puts the room first. Take the Red Line to Lawrence; the club is one block west of the stop.
Hours: Music nightly; most evening sets run 8 p.m. to midnight, with late sets Fri 1 to 3:30 a.m. and Sat 1 to 4 a.m.
Address: 4802 N Broadway, Chicago, IL 60640
Why they made the list
- Preservation Chicago reported in 2026 that Jemilo sold the club to longtime staffers Jason Cole and Jill Skintges.
- The Friday late session is a jam led by Marquis Hill from 1 to 3:30 a.m., and the cover from 1 a.m. to closing is $5.
- The Sun-Times calls the building Al Capone’s Prohibition-era hangout and notes that the club appears in the films High Fidelity and Ocean’s Twelve.
- The Uptown Poetry Slam, which began after Jemilo brought in Marc Smith, still runs on some Sunday afternoons from 3 to 5 p.m.

Jazz Showcase
Joe Segal began presenting jazz in 1947 with student jam sessions at what is now Roosevelt University, and by his own estimate he went on to book shows at 63 locations around the city. His club, the Jazz Showcase, now sits inside the landmark Dearborn Station in the South Loop and is run by his son, Wayne Segal. The National Endowment for the Arts named Joe Segal an NEA Jazz Master in 2015 for jazz advocacy. Nearly 80 years of Segal bookings and two sets on most nights earn second place. Park in the lot behind the building after 6:30 p.m. for $7.
Hours: Check current hours before you go.
Address: 806 S Plymouth Ct, Chicago, IL 60605
Why they made the list
- Sunday matinees start at 4 p.m., and kids 12 and under get in free.
- The Harrison Red Line stop and the LaSalle Street Metra station are each a few blocks away.
- Joe Segal died in August 2020 at age 94, JazzTimes reported, and Wayne Segal took over ownership of the club.

Andy’s Jazz Club
Newspaper workers drank at Andy’s Lounge in the 1950s, and live jazz arrived in 1977 with a Friday series called Jazz at Noon. Today Andy’s Jazz Club in River North runs three sets a night, with no late set on Mondays and Tuesdays. Scott Chisholm took over in the mid-1970s, and his sons Chris, Jeff and Brandon now run the room. Music on every night of the October 2026 calendar and nearly 50 years of jazz put Andy’s third. Book ahead: reservations are required, each one covers a single show and the room clears when the set ends.
Hours: Daily 5:30 p.m. to midnight (Mon-Tue until 10 p.m.); sets at 6, 8:15 and 10:30 p.m., with no 10:30 p.m. set Mon-Tue.

- Big bands play many Mondays, including the Heritage Jazz Orchestra on October 5 and the Shout Section Big Band on October 26, 2026.
- Guests under 21 need a main-floor or raised back-corner table, because the bar area is 21 and over.

Le Piano
Chad Willetts founded Le Piano in 2018 as a listening room built around a grand piano, around the corner from the Morse Red Line stop in Rogers Park. The about page is blunt on the point: “Certainly not to be construed as a piano bar.” Chicago pianists and small groups play every evening, from a Monday jam session to weekend trios and quartets, and the Chris White Quartet and Bob Lark Trio are booked for October 16 and 17, 2026. Music every evening, mostly jazz, at covers of $10 to $20 earns fourth place. Doors open at 6 p.m. for 7 p.m. shows, so come early to eat first.
Hours: Doors 6 p.m., shows 7 p.m.; kitchen 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tue-Thu and Sun, 6 to 10:30 p.m. Fri-Sat.

Winter’s Jazz Club
Set on the promenade at McClurg Court, just west of Navy Pier and facing the Ogden Slip, Winter’s Jazz Club runs as a Streeterville listening room from Wednesday through Sunday. Each night has two 75-minute sets. The fall 2026 calendar mixes Chicago regulars with bigger draws, including Patricia Barber on October 28 and the Ben Paterson Organ Trio with Bobby Broom on October 24, and many nights carry a theme, such as the music of Art Blakey and Horace Silver on October 30. Five jazz nights a week in a room built for listening put Winter’s fifth, one step behind the seven-night schedule at Le Piano. The club takes no reservations, so buy a ticket online.
Hours: Wed-Thu 5 to 10:30 p.m.; Fri-Sat 6 to 11:30 p.m.; Sun 4 to 9:30 p.m.; closed Mon-Tue. Sets Wed-Thu 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., Fri-Sat 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Sun 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Constellation
Chicago musician and presenter Mike Reed opened Constellation in March 2013 on Western Avenue in Roscoe Village, and the venue’s own count tops 220 concerts and 600 musicians a year. Jazz, improvised music and contemporary classical make up most of the calendar. Between October 14 and November 8, 2026, eight shows carry the jazz tag, among them Wadada Leo Smith with the Stein/Smith/Shead Trio on October 23 and Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Hero Trio on November 5. Several jazz bookings a week, many of them experimental, rank Constellation sixth. Shows are almost all seated, on risers and floor chairs, so buy ahead for the bigger names.
Hours: Show times vary by event; most fall 2026 shows list 8 p.m. doors and an 8:30 p.m. start.
Address: 3111 N Western Ave, Chicago, IL 60618
Why they made the list
- Tickets on the fall 2026 calendar run from $5 to $35, and several shows use a sliding scale such as $5 to $25.

- Constellation was founded as an African-American owned business and formed a nonprofit arm in 2018, the venue’s history page says.

Hungry Brain
Musicians Mike Reed and Josh Berman started the weekly Sunday Transmission concert series at the Hungry Brain in January 2001, and the low-lit Roscoe Village bar marked 20 years of jazz and improvised music in 2021. The room has arcade games and a jukebox. Half of the bookings on the October 14 to 24, 2026 calendar are jazz, including a Thursday residency by Matt Ulery and the Natalie Scharf Quartet on October 23. A jazz history at the bar that reaches back to 2001 ranks the Hungry Brain seventh. Most shows start at 9 p.m., with doors between 6 and 7 p.m.
Hours: Check current hours before you go.
Address: 2319 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60618
Why they made the list

The Whistler
Every Tuesday and Wednesday, The Whistler books Chicago jazz players at the Logan Square bar on Milwaukee Avenue. The room has hosted DJs, jazz and rock since 2008 and doubles as a record label and an art gallery, with a cocktail menu posted fresh each day. On the first Tuesday of each month the stage opens up for a jam session that welcomes any jazz musician. Two standing jazz nights a week put The Whistler eighth, one spot behind the Hungry Brain, whose jazz series goes back to 2001. Players should bring an instrument on jam night.
Hours: Check current hours before you go.
Address: 2421 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

- The bar’s about page says there is no cover charge.

Elastic Arts
Thursday nights at Elastic Arts belong to the Improvised Music Series, which in October 2026 paired acts such as Jon Mueller, Matt Blair and Ro Lundberg with Nathan Hanson and Steve Hirsh. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit grew out of a collective of friends who began sharing rehearsal and performance space in Pilsen in 1998, then incorporated in 2002 after moving into a converted church in Humboldt Park. The current home is a Diversey Avenue space in Logan Square. A single weekly improvised music series, with the rest of the calendar given to experimental sound, put Elastic Arts ninth. Doors open an hour before each event.
Hours: Open one hour before events, or by appointment.
Address: 3429 W Diversey Ave #208, Chicago, IL 60647
Why they made the list

FitzGerald’s
Out in Berwyn, FitzGerald’s sits on Roosevelt Road, and the corner Sidebar room books free jazz on weeknights. The October 2026 calendar has the Andy Brown Trio on Wednesday, October 14, and the Luke Polipnick Trio for Thursday Night Jazz in the Sidebar on October 15, both at 7 p.m. The building has a long jazz past: WTTW ran a photo of the Salty Dogs playing there in the mid-1950s, when the club was the Hunt Club. As the list’s one suburban room, FitzGerald’s ranks tenth because city clubs come first. Sidebar jazz shows are all ages.
Hours: Tue-Thu 5 to 11 p.m.; Fri 5 p.m. to midnight; Sat noon to midnight; Sun noon to 11 p.m.; closed Mon.
Address: 6615 W Roosevelt Rd, Berwyn, IL 60402
Why they made the list
- FitzGerald’s joined the National Register of Historic Places in January 2025, and WTTW reported the club was the first Illinois music venue the National Park Service recognized.
- Will Duncan and Jess King bought the club in March 2020 from Bill and Kate FitzGerald, who had run the club since 1980.
- WTTW also reported that Club Ritz, the 1930s business on the site, had direct ties to Al Capone’s gang until Berwyn’s mayor shut the club down in 1934.
