The brunch and breakfast guide to Chicago

This guide is for anyone planning a weekend breakfast in Chicago and trying to decide between a 90-minute wait and a diner counter with an open stool. It covers the Logan Square and Wicker Park rooms that people plan a Saturday around, the diners that are open when the bars close, the brunches where the cocktail list matters, the lines that are actually worth standing in, and the weekday mornings when most of the city is at a desk.

Every place here was open as of late September 2026, with hours taken from each restaurant’s own site. Check before you go; they change.

The Logan Square and Wicker Park classics

The Blue Line does the work in this section. Damen, Division, California and Logan Square stations all land you within a few blocks of a table, and driving on a weekend means circling. Wicker Park’s side streets are mostly permit zones, and the meters on Milwaukee Avenue turn over slowly. Logan Square’s boulevards have free parking but fill early on Sundays, when the farmers market takes over Logan Boulevard from May into October.

Lula Cafe

A corner room on the square itself, https://windycitymagazine.com/business/lula-cafe/ sits at 2537 N. Kedzie Blvd. in Logan Square, two minutes from the Logan Square Blue Line stop. The menu changes with the market and leans organic, and the daytime service runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Monday, closed Tuesdays. Lula takes reservations through OpenTable, which is the practical reason to pick this room over the walk-in-only spots on a busy Sunday. Phone is (773) 489-9554.

Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits

Biscuits are the reason to go to https://windycitymagazine.com/business/bang-bang-pie-and-biscuits/ at 2051 N. California Ave., a short walk from the California Blue Line station. The shop opens at 7 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends, and closes at 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, so a late brunch is not an option. The back patio closes for winter. Dove’s Luncheonette

At the six-way corner of Damen, North and Milwaukee, https://windycitymagazine.com/business/doves-luncheonette/ is a 41-seat counter at 1545 N. Damen Ave. in Wicker Park, steps from the Damen Blue Line. The food is Southern-inspired Mexican, the chicken fried chicken is the plate people mention, and the bar pours tequila and mezcal from the morning on. Service starts at 9 a.m. daily. There are no reservations, and on a weekend the stools fill by 10:30 a.m.

Diners that open by 6 a.m.

For shift workers, red-eye landings and anyone who needs hash browns at 5 a.m. None take reservations.

White Palace Grill

Open 24 hours every day, https://windycitymagazine.com/business/white-palace-grill/ has held the corner of Canal and Roosevelt at 1159 S. Canal St. since 1939. The counter and booths do omelets, waffles, a corned beef skillet and meatloaf, with dinner specials around $16 according to an April 7, 2026 WTTW story on the diner. There is a small lot, rare for this list, and the Clinton Blue Line stop is a walk north. The diner shot scenes for the final season of The Bear in February 2026. Phone is (312) 939-7167.

Golden Nugget Pancake House

The Avondale location of https://windycitymagazine.com/business/golden-nugget-pancake-house/ at 2406 W. Diversey Ave. is the one that never closes; the other Golden Nuggets keep regular hours. Expect steak and eggs, milkshakes and a full pancake list at 4 a.m. The #49 Western and #76 Diversey buses stop at the corner, and street parking on Diversey is easy overnight and harder on weekend mornings. The 24-hour schedule was confirmed in a March 16, 2026 diner list from The Infatuation.

Uncle Mike’s Place

Filipino breakfast is the draw at https://windycitymagazine.com/business/uncle-mikes-place/, 1700 W. Grand Ave. in West Town, open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week with breakfast served all day. Order a silog plate, which is garlic rice, a fried egg and your choice of longanisa, tocino or tapa, or the marinated skirt steak. Valois Restaurant

A cafeteria line with trays, https://windycitymagazine.com/business/valois-restaurant/ at 1518 E. 53rd St. in Hyde Park opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. every day. Valois has been on 53rd Street since 1921. The 53rd Street Metra Electric stop is two blocks east, and the #6 Jackson Park Express bus runs to the Loop. The line at 9 a.m. on a Saturday moves fast once you reach the steam table. Phone is (773) 667-0647.

Lou Mitchell’s

Founded in 1923, https://windycitymagazine.com/business/lou-mitchells/ at 565 W. Jackson Blvd. in the West Loop opens at 6 a.m. Wednesday through Friday and 7 a.m. on weekends, closes at 2 p.m., and is dark on Monday and Tuesday. Donut holes and Milk Duds at the door are a tradition from 1958. The restaurant sits across from Union Station, which makes this the breakfast for an early Metra or Amtrak departure.

Brunch with a cocktail list

Sit-down brunches with a real bar and a table you can hold for two hours. All four take reservations; use them.

Big Jones

Weekend brunch brings fried chicken, pancakes and shrimp and grits, and the bar stocks more than 100 American whiskeys. The #22 Clark bus stops at the door. Clark parking is metered and tight. The Publican

Weekend brunch at https://windycitymagazine.com/business/the-publican/ runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 837 W. Fulton Market in the West Loop. The room is a beer hall with communal tables, and the menu includes the Publican breakfast plate with house sausage and bacon at $21, red-wine poached eggs at $23 and the Pubstack buttermilk pancakes at $19. The Morgan Green and Pink Line stop is two blocks south. Weekend parking in Fulton Market means a garage. Phone is (312) 733-9555.

Ina Mae Tavern & Packaged Goods

New Orleans is the theme at https://windycitymagazine.com/business/ina-mae-tavern/, 1415 N. Wood St. in Wicker Park, where brunch runs 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Frozen drinks and absinthe are on the list, and the food is char-grilled oysters, po’boys, catfish and smash burgers. The patio is dog friendly. Closed Mondays. Daisies

The pasta restaurant https://windycitymagazine.com/business/daisies/ at 2375 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Logan Square runs a Sunday-only brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a full bar and cocktails, plus a cafe counter open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. During brunch service the pastries and coffee are to-go only. Daisies adds a 25 percent service charge to every dine-in check in place of tipping, which changes the math on the bill. The California Blue Line stop is a few blocks south. Phone is (773) 697-9443.

Where the wait is worth it

Three places where the line is part of the deal. Go early, and bring a coat in winter because the lines form outside.

Kasama

The daytime side of https://windycitymagazine.com/business/kasama/, 1001 N. Winchester Ave. in Ukrainian Village, is a counter-service bakery and Filipino breakfast spot open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The catch is on the restaurant’s own site: the kitchen and dining room close at 2 p.m. or when capacity is reached, whichever comes first, and on weekends capacity comes first. Arrive before the doors open. Dinner is a separate reservation-only tasting menu at $325 a person. The #70 Division and #9 Ashland buses are closest; the Division Blue Line stop is about a 10-minute walk east. Street parking on Winchester is permit-restricted.

Batter & Berries

The French toast flight is why people wait at https://windycitymagazine.com/business/batter-and-berries/, 2748 N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Park: four slices, each in a different rotating flavor. The Cluck-N-Gaufre, a sweet potato waffle stuffed with fried chicken, is the other order. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday through Monday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The Diversey Brown and Purple Line stop is a short walk east. The weekend waitlist can run past an hour by 10 a.m.; the South Loop location at 2318 S. State St. tends to be shorter. Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe

Randolph St. is across from Millennium Park and Millennium Station, so the Saturday line is half tourists and half Metra Electric riders. The pancakes are the order, the berry versions especially. Wildberry has five locations, including Water Tower Place at 196 E. Pearson St., and posts an online waitlist link for several of them. Loop garages are expensive; every L line stops within three blocks. Phone is (312) 938-9777.

Weekday breakfast when everyone else is at work

The trick to Chicago breakfast is Tuesday. Most of the rooms above are empty at 9 a.m. on a weekday. Lou Mitchell’s, Valois and Uncle Mike’s Place all open at 6 a.m. midweek, Bang Bang Pie starts biscuits at 7 a.m., and the cafe counter at Daisies opens at 7 a.m. with no service charge on a to-go coffee. Note that Lula Cafe is closed Tuesdays and Lou Mitchell’s is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Milk & Honey Cafe

Open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day, https://windycitymagazine.com/business/milk-and-honey-cafe/ at 1920 W. Division St. has been the low-stress Wicker Park breakfast since 2002. House pastries rotate daily, lunch runs to shrimp quesadillas and a $4 cup of tomato basil soup, and the room is quiet enough on a weekday to work in. The Damen Blue Line stop is about a 10-minute walk; the #70 Division bus stops out front. There is metered parking on Division and permit parking everywhere else. Phone is (773) 395-9434.

Good to know

• Patios at Bang Bang Pie, Ina Mae and Lou Mitchell’s summer cafe close for the season, usually by late October; expect indoor-only seating through March.
• Sunday parking in Logan Square is hardest during the farmers market season on Logan Boulevard, which runs into October. Take the Blue Line.
• Kasama’s daytime service ends when the room hits capacity, which on weekends can be well before the posted 2 p.m. kitchen close.
• Lou Mitchell’s is closed Monday and Tuesday; Lula Cafe is closed Tuesday; Ina Mae is closed Monday. Big Jones lists an Edna Lewis harvest dinner on October 11, 2026, which affects that evening, not brunch.
• Daisies adds a 25 percent service charge on dine-in checks; budget for it.
